The company was formed as part of Dr. Bilsky's novel Entrepreneurial Minded Dissertation (EMD) program that he created where he taught his way through a PhD, funded the development of the snake-like robot using economic development grants, and got to walk away owning the patents for the robot (not Lehigh University as is typically the case in doctoral research). Dr. Bilsky gave a 5 minute talk at the University Economic Development Association 2018 conference describing how he leveraged economic development resources to empower student startups.
